Coroner Highlights Critical Delays in Home Birth Tragedy of Mother and Baby

A coroners inquest revealed that critical delays in medical response during a home birth led to the tragic deaths of mother Jennifer Cahill and her baby Agnes Lily in Prestwich.

• Jennifer Cahill, 34, experienced severe postpartum bleeding during her home birth in Prestwich on 3 June 2024 and later died from complications at North Manchester General Hospital.
• The coroner identified gross failings in antenatal care and criticized the actions of two inexperienced midwives present during the home birth for not facilitating timely hospital transfer.
• Cahill suffered a cardiac arrest due to excessive blood loss, which could have been avoided with quicker medical intervention, according to findings presented at the Rochdale Coroners Court.
